THE JEHOVAH TITLES
By Pastor Jared Decker
JEHOVAH-MEKADDISHKEM
We began a series three weeks ago looking at how God reveals himself in Scripture through various names that describe His character and relationships with mankind.
Now we turn to the book of Exodus and we will study the next name by which God revealed Himself to His people and to us.
First Mention: Exodus 31:13
Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.
Meaning: The Lord That Sanctifies You
SANC'TIFY
1. To cleanse from corruption; to purify from sin; to make holy by detaching the affections from the world and its defilements, and exalting them to a supreme love to God.
2.
To separate or set apart for a divinely intended purpose.
Thomas Carlyle
The man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder – a waif, a nothing, a no man. Have a purpose in life, and, having it, throw such strength of mind and muscle into your work as God has given you.
Just as every man must have a purpose in life, our God has sanctifying purposes for our lives.
We’ve all heard and maybe all used the phrase, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” That is always true throughout the Word of God. Whenever God expressed His will, He always made a way for it to be performed.
I Thessalonians 4:3
v3. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification…
It is God’s will that we be sanctified, it is His purpose for us; therefore, through his very person, Jehovah-Mekaddishkem, He has provided for His will, our sanctification.
God’s Three Purposes For Every Man:
1. To Save Those Who Are Lost.
His purpose is to sanctify for salvation from the condemnation of eternal separation in the Lake of Fire.
II Peter 3:9
v9. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Matthew 18:11
v11. For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
Romans 6:23
v23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 5:8-9
v8. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
v9. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
2. To Separate Those Who Are Saved.
His purpose is to sanctify for separation from the cares of this world to the eternally existent treasures of Heaven.
II Corinthians 6:14-17
v14. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
v15. And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
v16. And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
v17. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
God’s purpose for His people is to be a city set upon a hill that cannot be hid. We are to be a holy, separate, peculiar people.
Because this is His purpose, He has given us the ability to perform it, by giving us the pattern to conform to – the image of His Son.
Romans 12:1-2
v1. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
v2. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
We are to be vessels molded, or conformed, to the image of Christ and to the purpose God has intended for us.
II Timothy 2:20-21
v20. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
v21. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
3. To Maintain Those Who Are Separated.
His purpose is to sanctify for service through the trials and tribulations and troubles and temptations of this life.
Job 23:10
v10. But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
A. Through Support from Him
Psalms 55:22
v22. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Hebrews 4:16
v16. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
B. Through Service to Him
The best way to continue to become more like Christ, more separated, more dedicated, is to serve the Lord. We were made to serve the Lord.
Ephesians 2:8-10
v8. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
v9. Not of works, lest any man should boast.
v10. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
C. Through Sacrifice for Him
Psalms 51:17
v17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
